And God said…

Let’s take this to the boss. Photo by Steve Martaindale

It’s 87 days until the general election. Go to, a site by the League of Women Voters, to determine if you’re properly registered to vote. If not, there are links and information to help you do so. Get registered, plan to vote, vote early, take a friend.

We’ve known for some time this is an important election, but the stakes are now even higher.

You see, God’s been dragged into it.

Some people think God selects the president. I’m not sure, in their thought process, if God overrides free will and makes people vote a certain way or if he conspires with a foreign power to rig the election.

Never mind. It doesn’t matter because God knows better than to talk politics or religion. That’s why he doesn’t pick who wins a football game or even the World Series.

If you missed it, Donald Trump last week had this to say about Joe Biden:

“He’s following the radical left agenda, take away your guns, destroy your 2nd Amendment, no religion, no anything, hurt the Bible, hurt God. He’s against God. He’s against guns.”

That prompted quite a reaction. I mean, even the (previously) craziest politician would not have gone there. And that’s not so much because its off-limits or whatever, but anybody who has paid any attention knows Biden is pretty open about his spiritual life. He’s often cited how it’s guided him during rough times. There’s really not much of an argument.

But bullies don’t need a verifiable reason to throw out hateful rhetoric.

Biden’s response:

“Like the words of so many other insecure bullies, President Trump’s comments reveal more about him than they do about anyone else. They show us a man willing to stoop to any low for political gain, and someone whose actions are completely at odds with the values and teachings that he professes to believe in.”

Trust me, Joe Biden probably wasn’t shocked by the words. After Trump started locking up infants, it’s simply been a series of pauses to see how he would embarrass the nation next … and he always comes through.

John Pavlovitz, a writer, pastor and activist from Wake Forest, N.C., penned an open letter to Trump that included the following:

“If you knew anything about Jesus, if you’d ever read the Gospels, if you even once opened the Bible and saw what the Good News Jesus preached actually was – you’d know the kinds of things that hurt God:

“160,000 Americans dying without a shred of compassion for them.

“Children taken from the arms of their parents and put into dog kennels.

“Families pepper-sprayed for a sociopath’s Bible-wielding photo op.

“Terrified refugees denied sanctuary from their suffering.

“A leader who celebrates a rising NASDAQ and ignores a rising death toll.

“Dehumanizing women by talking about their genitalia.

“Black men murdered in the streets and a leader who will not condemn the executioners.

“Rubber bullets fired into the bodies of young mothers standing silently in solidarity with those black men.

“Someone trying to take away healthcare from millions of people in a pandemic.”

Here’s another response. The Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II is a Protestant minister and political activist, president at Repairers of the Breach, and co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. He tweeted:

“Mr. Trump, Jesus said when you hurt the hungry, the sick, the immigrant, the prisoner, the poor & the least of these, you hurt God & violate the values of God.

“When your policies are examined by what Jesus said, you might want to be quiet about someone else’s faith.”

Here’s an idea.

If you are religious – Christian, Jewish, Muslim, whatever – seek the guidance of the God you worship. See what he or she has to say.

I would love to hear your thoughts.
